Opening Act is proud to announce the launch of the Opening Act Youth Company, a brand-new citywide ensemble bringing together high school students from across New York City to create bold, original theater that amplifies youth voices and tackles issues that matter most to them.
Beginning in October 2025, the Opening Act Youth Company will collaborate over several months to devise and perform an original play rooted in the ensemble’s own stories, ideas, and social justice themes. Under the guidance of professional theater artists, participants will explore new perspectives, take creative risks, and learn what it means to build community through art. The process will culminate in a public performance at a professional New York City theater in April 2026.
Members of the Youth Company will participate in weekly sessions and special workshops throughout the school year, gaining access to professional mentorship, industry resources like résumé and headshot support, and opportunities to see live theater across the city — all at no cost to participants.
Auditions for the inaugural company will take place in early October 2025, with students selected through a group audition process designed to foster collaboration and creativity. No prior theater experience is required, only enthusiasm and commitment to the ensemble process.
The program will run from October 2025 through April 2026, with rehearsals and performances culminating in a weekend of original shows at a professional venue.
With the launch of the Opening Act Youth Company, Opening Act continues to expand opportunities for young artists across New York City, empowering them to make their voices heard, tell their stories, and take the stage.
