This fall, members of the Opening Act Youth Company stepped out of the rehearsal room and into some of New York City’s most exciting theaters, experiencing live performance not just as audience members, but as artists in the making.

These theater outings are a core part of the Youth Company experience. By seeing professional productions together, students deepen their understanding of storytelling, performance, and design, while building shared reference points that inform their own creative work. Just as importantly, these trips affirm that NYC’s vibrant theater ecosystem belongs to them.

Over the course of the season, Youth Company members attended The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire at Vineyard Theatre, Queens at Manhattan Theatre Club, and Broadway performances of Mamma Mia! and Beetlejuice. Each production sparked rich conversations about genre, tone, character, and theatrical choices, conversations that students brought back into the studio as they continue devising their own original play.

For many students, these experiences were transformative. Seeing artists who look like them onstage, witnessing bold storytelling choices, and engaging with live theater at this level reinforced what Opening Act strives to make possible: access, inspiration, and a sense of belonging within the arts.

We are deeply grateful to Vineyard Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, and our Broadway partners for donating tickets and helping make these experiences possible. Their generosity ensures that young artists from across the city can engage with theater at the highest level, regardless of access or circumstance.

As the Opening Act Youth Company continues developing their original work, these shared theater experiences will remain a touchstone, fueling creativity, sharpening artistic instincts, and strengthening the ensemble along the way. Stay tuned for more updates, and for performance details in the months ahead.
