Our Programs
Opening Act Theater Programs strive to bridge the arts education access gap and ensure that all students across New York City have the opportunity to experience the life-changing benefits of theater. We believe that creativity and self-expression are essential parts of a young person’s education and that every student deserves a space to explore their imagination, collaborate with peers, and discover their own potential.

Opening Act’s unique, student-centered curriculum is built on the foundations of improvisation and playmaking, encouraging curiosity, risk-taking, and joy in the learning process. Through ensemble-based activities and the creation of original work, students learn to listen deeply, communicate clearly, and lead with confidence. Each program invites students to find and strengthen their artistic voice, while developing critical life skills such as empathy, resilience, and teamwork — skills that will serve them well both on and off the stage. Our program offerings include:

"In the world teens are often told their voice and authentic self must fit into a world dictated by adults and bureaucrats. In Opening Act my child is given agency over their voice, story, and acting goals. They feel safe, supported, and celebrated at every turn, even during tough times."

Opening Act
Youth Company
The Opening Act Youth Company is our advanced ensemble of student artists. Together, they create and perform original theater pieces that reflect their lived experiences, amplify their voices, and engage audiences across New York City. Through the Youth Company, students deepen their artistry, collaborate with professional mentors, and step into leadership roles as young creatives.

"It’s really a beautiful thing to see how a lot of the kids come into the program, and they don’t really know themselves, and then they unravel into this beautiful flower. This is a program that catches people in some of their most crucial years and offers guidance."

Bring Opening Act
to Your School
Opening Act partners with NYC public schools to provide high-quality theater education where arts opportunities are often limited. With a long history of working with high school, middle school, and District 79 students, our curriculum can be adapted to a variety of student needs and interests. Our teaching artists work directly with students to build collaboration, self-expression, and community, skills that extend beyond the stage.
